I went slumming yesterday in a coffee shop in AMK near the AMK Hub. Quite unintended as I had wanted to go to check out AMK Hub and had asked a friend who worked nearby to give me directions. He insisted we went instead to the kopitiam near Courts (cheapest electronics in S’pore, according to him) and have the best value for money yong tau foo. 40 cents a piece, big n juicy, he said lyrically. I was more worried whether there wld be aircon.
There wasn’t. And the yong tau foo looked n tasted exactly like what I cld have gotten at an aircon foodcourt, and no less pricey. After all, most food court or coffee shop food nowadays usually comes from a central kitchen somewhere.
However all wasn’t lost. After we finished our meal (my friend had fish n chips which looked really gross and he left most of it– so much for his fantastic kopitiam food boast), he led me to the AMK Community Library a few steps away. We had pricey coffee ($2.90 per pax in a paper cup some more!). When I asked for a shot of caramel, he had to pay another $1 for a drip of liquid caramel!
The savings grace of the whole epiosde was that the library has great loos, relatively speaking. Got paper, got soap and a mystery… one lady cubicle in the ladies but two very large and clean hand wash basins. More women wash their hands at the library than go to the loo? Lol!
